Settled down

As I hoped, things have settled down now that classes have started.  Today was a nice day with not much going on.  I decided to sign up for the gym here on campus.  Nice place, big workout center with an olympic size swimming pool and a basketball court.  Since this is my last semester, I am really going to enjoy and do as much as possible as far as recreation.  I am only in class about 9 hours per week, so I will have plenty of time to swim, lift weights, and do whatever else.  Much different from last semester in Iowa City.  I was lucky to get to the gym once per week, and I had too many 12 hour days consisting of work then class.

One thing I have noticed is that Australians take a while to open up.  I heard many people say it during orientation, and it is definitely true.  Especially when there are many Australians together in the same place, it’s hard to really talk to them.  I am glad that I am living with many internationals, since internationals will definitey open up quicker when meeting people.

I just saw that AIG lost over $60 billion in one quarter.  How one company can lose that much money in a quarter is beyond me.  Definitely scary to see that big of a company going down like that.  Australia is definitely being hit by the crisis too.  It’s in the news every day about new companies trying to find new money.  I even talked to a guy who thinks the Australian financial system is going to fail soon.  I’m not sure if I’d go that far yet.

There was another shark attack in Sydney yesterday.  That’s the third one in 18 days.  But I don’t think it’s much to worry about.  I have talked to many Australians that have said they’ve gone to the beach many, many times every year and have never seen a shark.  Plus, sharks feed in the mornings and at night.  I won’t be going to the beach at those times anyway.

I forgot to mention in my last note about a marlin and shark I saw at the harbor in Nelson Bay.  When we arrived at night, there were hundreds of people standing around looking at what this fisherman caught.  It looks to be about a 12 foot marlin and a similar shark.  Pretty amazing.

Well that is all for now.  I’ll try to keep posting more often now that I have more time.
