Another of the weekend trips from Prague, I spent two nights Couchsurfing in Vienna. I spent two days walking Vienna on a freezing weekend in early February. The weather was almost too cold to be outside, but I toughed through it and tried to learn what I could about the city.

Vienna is home of the Wiener Schnitzel (“Wien” is Vienna in German). I love trying foods in location of their original creation, so I was not going to pass up one of these. I found a traditional pub and jumped right in. The schnitzel was served with  a lemon for an extra flavor with a side of seasoned potatoes. Exactly the meal I was looking for.

To get a view of the life of the Habsburgs, a cool place to go is the Schönbrunn Palace. The palace was used by the former empire as a hunting lodge. Obviously, it’s not your typical hunting lodge. The palace gives you a glimpse at how the family lived from the late 17th century to the early 20th century. The enormous palace used as a hunting lodge shows what kind of wealth and power they possessed in their time. From the most delicate intricacies on a curtain to the room that a young Beethoven once played in, the palace is a great way to spend an afternoon in Vienna.

Although I braved the cold, grey weather, I feel like I didn’t get to fully experience Vienna at it’s best. I really enjoyed what I did have the chance to see, but weather will affect any travel experience.
