Antarctica…the best spontaneous trip I’ve ever taken. I did not know tourists could even get to Antarctica until a German backpacker talked about it when I met him in Bolivia. I already had plans to head to the most southern city in the world, Ushuaia, so I figured that I should give the trip a try. I found a last-minute tour agency and got a 50% discount for an 11-day tour on a ship that left just three hours after paying. I was psyched.

I could have never imagined the beauty that is Antarctica. I had almost no expectations on the 60-hour boat journey down. I just knew it was supposed to be cold, that I hoped to see a few penguins, and that there may be some icebergs here and there. What I found were towering white mountains bolting straight up on both sides of the ship as we cruised down a canal. I found the funniest penguins living in colonies along with hundreds of others doing their best to waddle on land. Lazy weddell seals laying on flat icebergs to take in the sun. And the most beautiful views of the dark blue waters of Paradise bay as Sei whales swam below. We “swam” in water with sub-zero temperatures. We camped with penguins and seals. And we just explored the Antarctic peninsula and the surrounding area.

My words cannot do it justice. Nor can the pictures. It’s something that I would recommend to anyone looking for an adventure and to do something truly unique. It is, by far, the most beautiful place that I have ever seen. It may be expensive, but it’s worth every cent. You will not regret it. I’ll just let the pictures do the talking…
